Steeply sloping bedrock, rock ledges, karst related solution features, soil corrosive of steel and concrete, and compressible fine-grained highly plastic soil were among the challenges faced by engineers for the I-99 Interstate Highway near State College Pennsylvania. Structural engineers collaborate with geologists and geotechnical engineers to meet design and construction challenges for bridge foundations.
