ARIZONA DROUGHT MONITORING AND DROUGHT PLAN IMPLEMENTATION

GARFIN, Gregg, CLIMAS: Climate Assessment for the Southwest, The University of Arizona, Tucson, AZ 85721-0156, gmgarfin@email.arizona.edu

The backbone of the Arizona Drought Preparedness Plan is effective drought monitoring, including a system for triggering drought mitigation and response actions, and delivering timely drought status reports to the Governor and the citizens of Arizona. This poster presentation is an update on efforts by a multi-agency drought monitoring technical committee, in conjunction with the Arizona Department of Water Resources and Arizona Cooperative Extension, to develop monthly drought status reports, a website with drought-related information for use by stakeholders and decision makers throughout Arizona, and a unique process for county-based volunteers to report drought impacts. The presentation will briefly address the implementation of a drought plan recommendation to develop drought response and mitigation plans for each community water provider in the state. The presentation will also address contributions by the Arizona drought monitoring technical committee members to a national effort to develop a drought information system for the United States.
