GEOPHYSICS AND TEST EXCAVATIONS AT HIGH BANK EARTHWORKS, ROSS COUNTY

GREBER, N'omi B., Archaeology, Cleveland Museum of Natural History, 1 Wade Oval Drive, Cleveland, OH 44106-1767, ngreber@cmnh.org

Combining near surface geophysical remote sensing surveys with small scale traditional archaeological excavations has provided significant information in studies of Hopewell sites in southern Ohio. Cleveland Museum of Natural History research has included field work at sites containing mounds and large earthen enclosure walls at Seip, Liberty, Baum, Frankfort, Works East, the Hopewell Site itself, and most recently High Bank. Electrical resistivity, conductivity, magnetic gradiometry, and GPR techniques have been used in various combinations and compared. Results to date from geophysical surveys and test trenches at High Bank Earthworks, Ross County will be presented.
