DAM REMOVAL : PEOPLE AND PROCESS THE CUYAHOGA RIVER EXPERIENCE

ZAWISKI, Bill, Division of Surface Water, Ohio Environmental Protection Agency, 2110 East Aurora Road, Twinsburg, OH 44087, bill.zawiski@epa.state.oh.us

Dam removal is a viable tool for water quality and habitat restoration. Environmental impacts associated with dams are generating greater interest as the process of watershed restoration occurs. The engineering and science behind the removal is generally clear and straightforward. A greater challenge often rests with public involvement and local government involvement. This talk will discuss and contrast different methods of interacting with the public and local governments and propose a general model for future projects.
