PETRIFIED TREES IN PENNSYLVANIAN STRATA: BEAR MOUNTAIN QUADRANGLE, EASTLAND COUNTY, TEXAS

ALLEN, Brandie R., Geology, Tarleton State University, 1133 W. Washington St. #118, Stephenville, TX 76401, bandynae@yahoo.com

The project is a study of the geologic history of the Bear Mountain quadrangle, near Strawn, Texas. The project includes a geologic map of the entire quadrangle, measured sections, a stratigraphic column, and cross-sections. Emphasis is on an area located in the north central portion of the quadrangle where several large petrified trees were discovered by the landowner. The project includes a detailed section with placement, dimensions, and orientations of the petrified logs. This data is obtained with the use of a GPS unit. Petrified tree data will be entered as an attribute table in a Geographic Information Systems program used to generate the maps.
