KAZAKHSTANITE: THE FIRST REPORT OF OCCURRENCE IN ARKANSAS, SECOND IN NORTH AMERICA, AND THIRD WORLDWIDE

HOWARD, J. Michael, Arkansas Geological Commission, 3815 West Roosevelt Road, Little Rock, AR 72204 and PEKOV, Igor V., Lomonosov Moscow State University, Moscow, Russia, mike.howard@arkansas.gov

A summary of mineralogical data and occurrences of this rare hydrated iron vanadium oxide, along with pictures of localities and specimens, and the story of the discovery and identification of the Arkansas material are presented with this poster.

The story of identification of this unusual mineral is one of missed opportunities by some mineralogists, lack of follow up by others, and persistence by the principal author to get a proper identification. A fortuitous meeting of the two authors in early 2006 resulted in the final proper identification and comparison of the Arkansas mineral with material from the type locality.
