THE ROLE OF THE ASSOCIATION FOR WOMEN GEOSCIENTISTS IN PROMOTING GIRL SCOUTING

As part of the Association for Women Geoscientists (AWG) mission, the group supports the active participation of Girl Scouts in a field-based geology summer camp through a program called Studio 2B (formerly known as WiderOp or Wider Opportunity). This program gives Girl Scouts ages 13-16 a two-week opportunity to engage, experience, and enjoy geology in a field environment with instruction by enthusiastic geology professors and graduate students from local institutions. Some examples of hands-on field based learning include: digging up and identifying fossils and sedimentary structures, measuring strike and dip, and locating themselves on a topographic map. Approximately 75 Girl Scouts participated in Nebraska based WiderOps. With the success of past trips in Nebraska, AWG encourages other Girl Scout Councils to seek out willing AWG Chapters to plan such expeditions in their state.
