HUMAN ACTIVITY AND CAROLINA BAYS

Carolina bays are minor landform features of unknown origin found only on the Atlantic Coastal Plain. Throughout human existence on the Coastal Plain they have influenced human activities and have been likewise affected by human activities. The physical characteristics of the bays have played a large part in shaping the cultural landscape of the region in which they are found. The bays have been instrumental in the location of roads and buildings, and as humans have been become more numerous in bay country, their activities have led to drainage of bays for agricultural and other human uses.
