APPLICATION OF POTENTIAL FIELD ATTRIBUTES IN DETERMINING THE LOCATION AND DEPTH OF SOURCES AT VARIOUS SCALES
Horizontal and vertical derivatives of gravity and magnetic fields have been long used in the interpretation of geologic structures. In particular, methods using the Analytic Signal (AS), a combination of both horizontal and vertical derivatives, have been used to locate anomalous sources and even interpret the depth to those sources. Potential Field Attributes (PFA) combine the AS method with two other gradient based methods to improve the results of gradient studies. Potential Field Tilt Angle (PTA) and Wavenumber (PW) are highly effective in locating the source of anomalies and are more sensitive to depth than other methods. The effectiveness of PFA will be demonstrated through model and real data sets at both environmental and regional scales.
