Accounting for the Areal Dimension of Soil Chronosequence Studies

NOLLER, Jay S., Oregon State Univ, 3017 Ag Life Sciences Bldg, Corvallis, OR 97331-8579, jay.noller@orst.edu

Soil chronosequence studies characteristically conform to demonstrations of 2D cross sections and 1D data analysis representations. This paper offers spatial analytical modes of examination and presentation of such data. Comparisons are made among soil chronosequences in different environments and stratigraphic contexts. By analyzing and presenting the areal dimensions of soil taxa differentiated by time, the relevance of pedogenesis to ecological processes and ecosystem services is all the more meaningful.
