A multimedia element such as Elluminate Live is an outstanding teaching tool for both real time and asynchronous learning over the internet. Special software or hardware is not necessary to create or view sessions in Elluminate. The Elluminate Live program provides a simple method of assembling images, powerpoint slides, web links and audio files into an interactive web based tool that can be produced on an office PC and viewed on any machine with internet access. Here we overview Elluminate Live features, demonstrate an actual ‘session' and discuss the advantages of incorporating Elluminate into the traditional or virtual classroom.

The advantages of employing this multi-media element to present content to traditional or distance learning courses are innumerable. Elluminate Live allows the instructor to monitor live chat sessions, modify and illustrate presentations, access the internet, and present difficult concepts through various tools. Students can interact directly with the ‘class' during a live session and view previous sessions for review. In distance learning courses, Elluminate Live establishes instructor ‘presence' all while addressing student learning styles and accommodating students with disabilities. It allows for ‘guest speakers' to present content from a distance—in real time or asynchronously. Finally, Elluminate Live allows the instructor to present content to meet the needs of students with variations in learning style preference and those with accessibility issues due to disability.
