GEOVISUALIZATIONS USING USARRAY DATA

HUNTER, Nancee C., Oregon Sea Grant, Hatfield Marine Science Center, 2030 SE Marine Science Drive, Newport, OR 97365, nancee.hunter@oregonstate.edu

This session will explore the affordances and constraints of using USArray data visualizations on flat and spherical displays in conjunction with interactive touch screens that educate and inform general public audiences. Through the use of newly created USArray visualizations, the Hatfield Marine Science Visitor Center is educating the public on geophysical processes. We will discuss the findings from various research related to two different exhibits – Active Earth (flat screen) and Magic Planet (spherical display system), as well as the interaction between both flat and spherical displays. Particular areas of focus will include: how people interact with and understand these visualizations; how to best develop new materials for general public audiences and an introduction to potential user groups (in particular, the Science on a Sphere network).
