CENTRAL FARMERS – GEORGETOWN CANYON FERTILIZER FACILITY REMEDIAL ACTION PLAN IMPLEMENTATION 2009-2010
In 2001, Nu-West demolished the plant structures. In 2004, Nu-West entered into a Consent Judgment with the State of Idaho to conduct a Site Investigation (SI) and develop a Remedial Action Plan (RAP) with the Idaho Department of Environmental Quality (IDEQ) as lead agency.
As a result of the SI and risk assessments, the RAP was developed in 2008 and approved by the IDEQ in early 2009. The RAP called for a two-phased approach. The first phase was completed in the summer and fall of 2009. The plant site was dewatered and graded drainages were improved and stabilized and the stockpiled ore was removed from the site and sold locally. Certain site features were capped with geomembranes, covered with clean native materials derived from Nu-West property, and reclaimed with approved seed mixes
The second phase of the RAP was completed in 2010. Approximately 2,600 feet of creek channel was reconstructed around the former plant site features to allow Georgetown Creek to be taken out of a corrugated metal pipe and “daylighted”, thereby reestablishing and restoring the creek that had been encased beneath the plant site since the early/mid 1950’s.
By executing the RAP, Nu-West will assure that the long-term risks to human health and ecologic receptors from environmental impacts will be mitigated and that risks from previously exposed media will be eliminated.
