GEORGE LYMAN CANNON, JR. - DENVER'S GREAT PALEONTOLOGICAL EDUCATOR
George Cannon was a young lad when placed under the spell of Arthur Lakes and the dinosaurs of Morrison in the 1870s. Cannon never outgrew his love of fossils and paleontology; he found many new species - Triceratops (Bison alticornis) and Ornithomimus being the two most famous. Cannon went on from Jarvis Hall eventually to the University of Denver. He became a noted science teacher in the Denver high schools – first at the old East High and then at Denver North. In 1892, he served as President of Colorado Scientific Society and treasurer for five years. A Colorado bred, born, and educated scientist at the turn of the twentieth century, Cannon’s life illustrates the importance of science and academics on the developing frontier.
