FASSETT, Laurry, United States Forest Service, Shasta-Trinity National Forest, Redding, CA 96002 and DE LA FUENTE, Juan, US Forest Service, 1312 Fairlane Road, Yreka, CA 96097, laurrywithjay@yahoo.com

The United States Forest Service is directed by policy to designate special areas with outstanding natural, recreational or cultural values as Special Interest Areas (SIA’s). Management objectives for SIA’s are (1) to protect, and where appropriate, foster public use and enjoyment of areas with scenic, historical, geological, botanical, zoological, paleontological, or other special characteristics, and (2) to classify areas that possess unusual recreation and scientific values so that these special values are available for public study, use, or enjoyment. The Shasta-Trinity National Forest is following in the footsteps of other forests to display brochures and web material to distribute to the public informing of these specific geologic features. Nine SIA’s have been recommended by the Land and Resource Management Plan (LRMP) of the Shasta-Trinity National Forest for designation. The Geologic SIA’s recommended are as follows: Black Butte, Deep Crater, Giant Crater, Little Glass Mountain, Natural Bridge, Paint Pot Crater, Pumice Stone Mountain, Samwell Cave, and Spatter Cones. Identifying, managing, and preserving these SIA’s will help the Shasta-Trinity National Forest protect its natural resources for the enjoyment of the public.
