Mapping is a fundamental method of collecting geospatial data, as well as one of the quickest and most effective ways of identifying and displaying geologic patterns. Within the open pit mining environment, mapping typically has been done on high walls and blast hole tailings. Data collected typically has included structure, lithology, formation, alteration, and mineral assemblages. Recent work within Newmont Mining Corporation has focused on integrating newly available technology and updating methods for mapping of northern Nevada at the Carlin, Twin Creeks, and Phoenix mine sites.

Data collection utilizes iX104C4 Explore tablets with GPS domes, Maptek I-site scanners, Trimble total stations to store and display the information three dimensionally. Software used to collect and analyze include ESRI ArcGIS 9.3, Adam 3-D rendering software, and Newmont TSS software.

This has resulted in the modification of mapping procedures, digital data collection, and a reassessment of mapping within workflow prioritization through the region. These new methods have improved efficiency of mapping and the precision and accuracy of the now GPS geo-referenced data. Data is used to reconcile mine models, enhance ore control in mining, identify areas of geotechnical concern, and increase precision of near mine exploration. Efforts continue to streamline the mapping process and better utilize the data being collected.

Ongoing work focuses on further integration of mapping to mine and ore deposit models, extrapolation of changes to areas through time, and enhanced model reconciliation. A program to innovate new data management techniques and data utilization is ongoing. Alternative hardware and software solutions are currently under review and approval.
