USING GLOBE STUDENT DATA AND CLASSROOM RESOURCES TO AID THE UNDERSTANDING OF EARTH SYSTEM SCIENCE

RANDOLPH, Gary, CHARLEVOIX, Donna and HOFFMAN, Martos, The GLOBE Program, P.O. Box 3000, Boulder, CO 80307, garyr@ucar.edu

The GLOBE Program, an international science and education program, has promoted student scientific research of Earth’s environment since 1995, engaging millions of students, teachers, and scientists in the study of Earth system science. GLOBE students and citizen scientists from around the world have collected data on their local environment (Atmosphere and Climate, Hydrology, Soil, Land Cover, and Phenology), sharing over 21 million environmental data with other members of the international GLOBE community (www.globe.gov).

GLOBE provides a rich set of on-line materials, tools, and resources, developed by scientists and educators, which promote scientific research and an understanding of Earth system science. GLOBE research protocols and instrument specifications ensure comparable data from around the world. GLOBE learning activities, including temporal and spatial data analysis, introductory GIS modules and utilizing satellite imagery assist in the understanding of Earth system. The newest GLOBE resource, the GLOBE Earth System Science Poster, was developed in cooperation with NASA and NOAA scientists and educators. This poster and associated activities guides the user in visually compare satellite imagery including insolation, surface temperature, aerosols, biosphere (chlorophyll content), precipitation and cloud cover. Attendees to this session will receive this poster and activity guide as well as other Earth system science resources.
