PRODUCTS OF THE SEISMIC HAZARDS ZONATION UNIT, CALIFORNIA GEOLOGICAL SURVEY (CGS)

PRIDMORE, Cynthia L., California Geological Survey, Department of Conservation, 801 K Street, MS 12-31, Sacramento, CA 95814, cpridmore@consrv.ca.gov

The Seismic Hazard Zonation Unit provides a range of products that are tied to the California 1972 Alquist-Priolo Earthquake Fault Zoning Act and the 1990 Seismic Hazards Mapping Act. The former was enacted to address surface fault rupture hazards, while the latter was enacted to identify other ground failure hazards including liquefaction and earthquake-induced landslides. CGS also works closely with the California Emergency Management Agency (CalEMA) and the USC Tsunami Research Center to produce statewide tsunami coastal inundation maps for emergency planning.

Products of the AP program include: CGS Special Publication 42, Fault-Rupture Hazard Zones in California*; Earthquake Fault Zone (EFZ) maps; digital images of the EFZs (CD); GIS files of the EFZs (CD); fault evaluation and fault investigation reports (CDs); the Fault Activity Map of California*; and the Digital Database of Quaternary and Younger Faults (Version 2)* from the Fault Activity Map of California.

Products developed under the Seismic Hazard Mapping Act include: Official Seismic Hazard Zone Maps*; Seismic Hazard Zone Reports*; Landslide Inventory Maps*; Special Publication 117A, Guidelines for Evaluating and Mitigating Seismic Hazards in California*; Special Publication 118, Recommended Criteria for Delineating Seismic Hazard Zones in California*; and downloadable GIS data*. Tsunami Inundation Maps* are developed for all populated coastal areas at risk, and represent a combination of the maximum considered tsunami for each area. In addition, Seismic Hazard Tsunami Maps for land use planning are planned to begin in 2011. CGS has educational materials that include: CGS Notes* on tsunamis, regulatory earthquake hazard zones, faults, and earthquakes; a generalized fault map of the state*, and various educational posters*.
