This inquiry activity is a learning cycle that has been successfully implemented in many classrooms. It creates prior knowledge using objects familiar to students, a stack of playing cards, and extends the knowledge to real world strategraphy. The concept of superposition is emphasized along with the analysis of the paleoenvironment of the local area. In this case, a cyclothem exhibiting a transgressive sequence of deposition in the Mattoon Formation (Penn).
