CARBON SEQUESTRATION PROJECTS IN THE CENTRAL US

PETERS, Dwight, Schlumberger Carbon Services, 14090 Southwest Freeway, Suite 300, Sugar Land, TX 77478, peters2@slb.com

In the Global Warming debate, increasing carbon dioxide (CO2) content in the atmosphere has been identified as a contributor to rising global temperature. To mitigate the amount of CO2 being released, many different processes and technologies are under development or demonstration. One major technology development is Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS), which involves capturing the CO2 at its source and safely and permanently sequestering it in deep, salt-water bearing reservoirs. Since 2003 the US Department of Energy, through 7 Regional Carbon Sequestration Partnerships, has been managing and funding technology development and CCS demonstration projects all across North America. This presentation will review the status of projects these partnerships have been doing in the Central US and their plans going forward. It will also touch on the legislative actions that must happen before CCS can become commercially viable, and describe what a commercial-scale sequestration project would look like.
