SUN TO SINK: HOW TO PREDICT STRATIGRAPHY USING PALEOCLIMATE

PERLMUTTER, Martin, Earth Science, Chevron, 1500 Louisiana, Houston, TX 77002 and FRANCIS, Jason M., Chevron Energy Technology Company, 1500 Louisiana, Houston, TX 77002, mprl@chevron.com

Climate cycles produce a range of hydrodynamic & sediment supply cycles that impact erosion, deposition & stratigraphic architecture & act to enhance or minimize clastic & carbonate reservoir occurrence.

This talk is a discussion of how paleoclimate variability affects stratigraphic prediction and interpretation. Topics that will be covered include; (a) the difference between paleoclimate interpretation & natural paleoclimate variability, (b) modeling of paleoclimate variability, (c) an example of how paleoclimate and fluvial drainage systems affected regional stratigraphic trends in the South Atlantic Rift System, (d) an example of 3D forward stratigraphic modeling of a South Atlantic basin, and (e) a real world example of how paleoclimate variability impacts the interpretation of stratigraphic architecture & reservoir prediction in an African Cretaceous lacustrine rift basin.
