DISTRIBUTION AND STRATIGRAPHY OF LATE QUATERNARY LACUSTRINE DEPOSITS IN THE WILLCOX BASIN, SOUTHEASTERN ARIZONA, INCLUDING PARTS OF THE RED BIRD HILLS, WILLCOX SOUTH, COCHISE, AND SULPHUR SPRINGS 7.5' QUADRANGLES
This geologic map covers Willcox Playa and its immediate surrounds in the Willcox Basin in southeastern Arizona, with particular emphasis on late Quaternary shoreline features associated with Paleolake Cochise. Mapping and description of ancient beach, deltaic, and associated near-shore deposits provides a stratigraphic framework for geochronological and sedimentological analyses that are being used to reconstruct the timing and surface area of lake stands during the latest Pleistocene epoch. In addition, late Quaternary piedmont deposits were mapped to provide a geomorphic context for shoreline features, as well as a better understanding of surficial processes associated with playa lakes.
