THE IMPACT OF MARCELLUS SHALE FORMATION GEOCHEMISTRY ON REUSE OF PRODUCTION BRINE AND FLOW BACK WATER

SVARCZKOPF, Timothy C., Atlas Energy Inc, 1550 Coraopolis Heights Road, Moon Township, PA 15108, tsvarczkopf@atlasenergy.com

This paper will investigate the impact of Marcellus Shale, Huntersville Chert, and Oriskany Sandstone formation geochemistry on water reuse initiatives. Specific data will be shared on relative water saturation for the formation zones, the impact of zonal water saturation on Marcellus well water production rates, and the water chemistry of the different formation zones. Results will be shared from a geochemical mass balance conducted on offset well flow back data comparing fresh water to reuse water for hydraulic fracturing. A scale inhibition model and osmotic pressure equalization model will be presented that are integral considerations for the Atlas Energy Inc. patent pending water reuse process.
