YOUR CAREER AS AN ENVIRONMENTAL GEOSCIENTIST

KETANI, Raphael, New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, Spill Response Program, 4601 39 Street, Apt 415, Sunnyside, NY 11104, rvketani@gw.dec.state.ny.us

If you are a geology student in a college or university in the state of California, or one of the Gulf of Mexico states, or in the Rocky Mountain region, you may have already heard lots of talk about employment in the oil and gas industry, or the mining industry. However, there is another field of employment for geologists which offers many opportunities for finding meaningful work at a good salary. This is the environmental industry.

As an environmental geologist, you may be employed in the broad specialties of hydrogeology, or remediation. More specifically, you may be involved in the exploration and development of groundwater resources. Alternatively, you may be involved in the investigation and remediation of sites that have been affected by the release of manmade chemicals. You would be involved in finding the chemicals, determining where they are and where they are traveling to, and their recovery (cleanup).

Employment opportunities abound throughout the United States and the world as an environmental geologist. You have only to take the initiative. Talk to your fellow geologists here at this joint Geological Society of America – American Institute of Professional Geologists meeting and at your departments. Good luck!
