A NEW ARRIVAL FROM THE SOUTH POLE – THE ZINSMEISTER COLLECTION OF ANTARCTIC MOLLUSKS NOW AT THE PALEONTOLOGICAL RESEARCH INSTITUTION IN ITHACA, NY

The William J. Zinsmeister Collection, formerly held by Purdue University has recently been transferred to the Paleontological Research Institution (PRI) in Ithaca, NY.

The Zinsmeister Collection contains approximately 5510 lots (ca 22,000 specimens) of Cretaceous-Eocene fossil mollusks from Seymour Island, Antarctica, including bulk samples from measured Cretaceous-Tertiary (KT) boundary sections. Specimens of this collection have been the subject of intense research for more than 30 years, on topics from molluscan evolution and biogeography to the Cretaceous-Tertiary mass extinction to global climate change.

As part of a 2-year project funded by the National Science Foundation, PRI is currently upgrading this collection to the highest curatorial standards to preserve it and make it more widely known and available to the research and educational communities than it has been before. This project will make specimen records and images of what may be the world’s largest and most comprehensive collection of Antarctic fossil mollusks widely available.
