STRENGTHENING SCIENCE EDUCATION AT METHODIST UNIVERSITY

DEMBOSKY Jr, John A., Department of Chemistry and Physical Science, Methodist University, 5400 Ramsey Street, Fayetteville, NC 28311, jdembosky@methodist.edu

Methodist University (MU) has traditionally supported Elementary Education and Middle Grades Science Education. As time has passed, our curriculum has experienced change as needed. In order to produce a well-rounded science background for our students, MU has recently revised the core science courses required within the Middle Grades Science Concentration. In the new requirements, general science courses have been replaced with introductory upper-level classes that are designed for science majors or specifically tailored toward education majors. In addition, the breadth of science coverage has been widened to better prepare future teachers for teaching the large number of fields within the sciences. The geoscience and technology coverage has notably been strengthened. With the new requirements, it is intended for graduates to be able to easily convey modern science to the next generation of Americans.
