MODELLING THE PATTERNS OF CORALLITE ARRANGEMENT AND COLONY SHAPES IN SCLERACTINIAN CORALS

JUNG, Jikhan, Geoscience, University of Iowa, Trowbridge Hall North Capitol St, Iowa City, IA 52242, jikhan-jung@uiowa.edu

A three-dimensional model of coral colony growth is presented. In this model, behavioral parameters of coral polyps such as connectivity, branching rate, growth rate, and their effects on corallite arrangement are explored. Different patterns of corallite arrangement that resemble the patterns seen in scleractinian corals can be formed by varying these parameters. Other factors that may affect the morphogenesis of coral colony are also discussed.
