Interdisciplinary Science for the Environment is a cross-disciplinary summer undergraduate research program at New Mexico Tech that was funded by the National Science Foundation’s Research for Undergraduates (REU) program from 2005-2011. The program successfully targeted Hispanic and Native American students from primarily undergraduate institutions in the southwest. The effort used a non-traditional program structure, which included pairing students and interdisciplinary faculty mentor teams. In addition to authentic scientific research, the students also participated in professional development activities and in environmentally and culturally-relevant field experiences. This presentation will review the program structure, recruitment efforts, and assessment data for six years of the program and make recommendations for others seeking to design programs that will meet the needs of underserved populations.
