STRATIGRAPHIC STUDY OF THE LILLY MCARTHUR GREGORY PLEISTOCENE FOSSIL SITE

The Lilly McArthur Gregory mammal site, located near Spur, Texas lies within a major drainage area that is bordered by a large unconformity between the Permian and Pleistocene strata. There are several excellent exposures of the Pleistocene soil horizons in this area. Current excavations of the exposed study sites reveal seven distinct horizons, perhaps more horizons with further study. These horizons are predominately distinguished by their clay content. Standard soil study methods are used to approximate clay content percentages in order to provide a credible stratigraphic control. A variety of micro fauna fossils are contained within these layers, which also contribute to the noticeable separation of the horizons. This study will examine the various characteristics of these soils, including their percent component compositions, the presence of micro fauna, and implications for providing a stratigraphic framework for this important mammal site.
