IMPLEMNTATION OF 3D ENGINEERING SOILS MAPPING FOR CHARLESTON SOUTH CAROLINA

LEVINE, Norman, Geology and Environmental Geosciences, College of Charleston, 66 George St, Charleston, SC 29424, levinen@cofc.edu

In the Lowcountry of South Carolina much of the engineering of the region takes place on top of and within the soil horizons. Today’s modern soils data bases and GIS techology lend themselves to the development of detailed soil maps of a region at the 1:24000 scale. The databases that can be attached to the soil maps includes up to 225 unique properties ranging from taxonomic classifications to detailed horizon information. This study shows multiple methods for displaying and using the soil data within true 3 dimensional visualizations. Both incremental and horizon depth maps of the region are displayed. The soil databases permit users to better understand the nature of soil stability and flooding across the region.
