SOMETIMES THEY LISTEN: STORIES FROM A SCIENCE NEWS CORRESPONDENT

HARRIS, Richard F., National Public Radio, 1111 North Capitol St. NW, Washington, DC 20002, rharris@npr.org

Though an important segment of the public disbelieves earth scientists when they talk about climate change, there are many other instances where the public embraces science. NPR Science Correspondent Richard Harris has witnessed this over his 30-year career as a journalist. This talk will draw out some examples, ranging from seismology to flood planning and extreme-weather preparedness. These success stories provide some insights for better communication and public acceptance of scientific expertise.
