ANALYSIS OF CARBONIFEROUS GLACIAL FURROWS ON DEVONIAN BEDROCK, PARANA STATE, BRAZIL; EVIDENCE FOR PALEO-TOPOGRAPHIC INFLUENCE ON FLOW
The advance of the Carboniferous ice sheet in Southern Brazil modified the older, and at the time lithified, Furnas formation, a Devonian age sandstone. Furrows and other glacial features on the surface of the Furnas were created. The furrows in the Witmarsum area, Parana State are predominantly north - south oriented, and do not vary by more than 12 degrees from a northward flow direction. The furrowed surfaces vary from near horizontal to an 11-degree dip, and occur at elevations between 966m and 1037m.
Furrow trends, bedding plane strike and dip, and elevations of furrowed surfaces were mapped and analyzed. Stereonet plots were used to determine the extent (if any) of post Paleozoic displacement and to reconstruct the original topography of the preglacial landscape. The information gathered will be used to determine the influence of the preglacial landscape on paleoglacial flow and conditions.
