PUBLIC GEOLOGICAL FIELD TRIPS BY THE ILLINOIS STATE GEOLOGICAL SURVEY: LEGACY AND CHANGE

ANDERSON, Lisa, Illinois State Geological Survey, Prairie Research Institute, University of Illinois, 615 E. Peabody Drive, Champaign, IL 61820, lisander@illinois.edu

The Illinois State Geological Survey (ISGS), a division of the Prairie Research Institute at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, has offered geological field trips to the public since the late 1930’s. The ISGS is committed to this service and legacy. The field trips are designed to acquaint citizens with geological processes and deposits throughout the state and are especially helpful to those who teach earth science. Historical photos of ISGS field trips and new field trip formats will be highlighted. In an effort to reach a wider audience, a field trip to Burnham Park in Chicago, Illinois is planned for the future. This walking tour will incorporate the geology of the park with historical and cultural aspects and has the potential to reach thousands of people. The ISGS is also exploring field trips to areas of the state that have a specific geological or environmental concern in order to educate the public and policy makers.
