FINDING REAL SOLUTIONS: THE IMPORTANCE AND NECESSITY OF RESEARCH GRANTS TO THE SUCCESS OF NATIVE AMERICAN STEM STUDENTS

JOURDAIN, Jerilyn N., N/a, Red Lake Nation College/Leech Lake Tribal College, Po Box 502, Redby, MN 56670, nikkijourdain@hotmail.com

The availability of research opportunities for Tribal College students translates directly into increased graduation rates of Native Americans in the sciences. Historically, Native Americans are underrepresented in most academic fields, STEM disciplines especially. Designing and funding science grants that incorporate hands on learning with traditional knowledge can improve the completion rate for higher degrees. By examining the academic backgrounds of Native American students that have completed advanced degrees, future research grants can be designed using the approach that had the most success. Investigating in depth the journey of one cohort from a Tribal College student to being a Tribal College faculty member will emphasize the importance of the availability of science research.
