POTENTIAL ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACTS OF UNCONVENTIONAL OIL AND GAS EXPLORATION AND PRODUCTION

BEACH, Fred, The University of Texas at Austin, Energy Institute, 2304 Whitis Ave, Stop C2400, Austin, TX 78712, fbeach@energy.utexas.edu

Increased activity in oil and gas exploration and production, including the advent of hydraulic fracturing in shale formations, has led to increased concern over the potential for ground water contamination, increased fugitive methane emissions, and incomplete combustion of flared gas. This talk provides a high level review of recent and future studies in all three areas.
