SACRED POISON: A DOCUMENTARY BY YVONNE LATTY
Sacred Poison is a 30-minute documentary that describes many of the complex and conflicting economic, political, environmental and spiritual issues involved in uranium mining.
A current debate on the Navajo Nation concerns evaluating the potential economic benefits of future uranium mining in the context of the environmental legacy of past mining practices which exposed many of the residents to radiation and uranium waste products. This documentary places the geomedical issues surrounding uranium mining in a very human context by describing both the poverty of the Navajo people in the areas mined for uranium and the health effects that been attributed to exposures to the wastes produced by the mining. It was produced by Yvonne Latty, the Director of the Reporting New York and Reporting the Nation programs at New York University's Carter Journalism Institute. Screening of the documentary will be followed by a discussion with the audience.
