COMPONENTS AND BENEFITS OF PROPERLY CONSTRUCTED WELLS

SCHNEIDER, Steve, National Ground Water Research & Educational Foundation, Schneider Water Services, 21881 River Road NE, St. Paul, OR 97137

Wells will be the primary source of sustainable drinking water in developing countries, especially in rural areas. Without safe, not just clean water, it is doubtful that adequate sanitation is achievable. This presentation will describe the importance of proper well construction and maintenance for the long term health and safety of its users, in addition to providing groundwater resource protection for future use. Attendees who specify, regulate or construct wells will be provided new information and tools for performing their work.

The presentation will discuss: global role of groundwater; cost-benefit of wells and their proper construction & maintenance; well location; basic drilling methods & products; well designs; annular sealing; commingling of water; plumbness and alignment; well development; surface completion; disinfection; testing; well decommissioning; documentation; personnel safety; and the importance of safe water in achieving satisfactory sanitation.

A reference water supply well guideline book and customizable cost-benefit analysis spreadsheet will be made available.
