UTAH'S DYNAMIC GEOLOGIC HISTORY: A TRIP THROUGH TIME

BOWMAN, Kinsey G., MORRIS, Thomas H. and COOK, Preston S., Department of Geological Sciences, Brigham Young University, Provo, UT 84602

Utah’s geologic history is both diverse and fascinating, albeit difficult to visualize. This collection of seven paleogeographic reconstructions provides an accurate look into Utah’s past. Each photorealistic map was carefully constructed using several Google Earth images from around the globe combined into one. Together, these maps illustrate the remarkable progression of Utah’s stratigraphy. Along with each map, there is a verbal description of the time period and tectonic setting, a stratigraphic column and corresponding index fossils, a paleo latitude map of the world, photos of key localities where the respective time period outcrops, and a map of those locations. As this was intended as a field guide for an undergraduate geology course, an educational design approach was used in the planning and layout of the book. By providing succinct useful material in one resource, students will be more capable of envisioning periods of Utah’s geologic history from the Pennsylvanian to the Quaternary. It also offers students valuable information that will deliver insights as they analyze strata and work in the field.
