THE RISE OF A CITY. THE EVOLUTION OF ADRIA (VENETO, ITALY) THROUGH GEOARCHAEOLOGICAL ANALYSIS

CORRĂ’, Elisa, Humanistic studies, University Ca' Foscari of Venice, Venice, 30123, Italy

Our proposal concerns the geoarchaeological study of the city of Adria, through the evolution of the landscape from the ancient pre-settlement conditions created by the Po River, to the deep changes of the Middle Ages. Located on the edge of Venetian Lagoon, nearby the city of Ravenna, this area is interesting for both palaeohydrographic variations of the Po River and human activities. For this reasons, our poster is focused on the interaction between human and environment, understanding the relations between the archaeological framework and alluvial stratigraphy.

Nowadays this area looks like a plan, for different kinds of geomorphological situations, as geomorphological alterations produced by ancient rivers, reclaim operations, geographic traits, agricultural cycles and climate variations. Geological data revealed also changes in the fluvial network that have deeply modified environmental conditions, landscape and way of living. This approach reveals a better understanding of the palaeoenvironmental evolution of the area and site forming processes.
