FLOW VELOCITY AND STRAIN RATE ANALYSIS OF THE EQUILIBRIUM STATE OF THE TAKU GLACIER USING THE CONTINUITY EQUATION

Glacier flow velocities and strain rates can be related to mass balance through the continuity equation. Here we use satellite-derived velocity data to determine the current equilibrium surface mass balance of the upper Taku Glacier, and compare values determined using this method to mass balance conditions measured directly in snow pits. This will allow us to determine whether this portion of the glacier is currently in equilibrium. Satellite velocity data have not previously been used in this manner on Taku Glacier, and this study will serve as a test case to determine whether these methods could be more widely applicable.
