THE CORNISH INFLUENCE IN MARYLAND'S COPPER & CHROME MINES

JOHNSSON, Johnny, Vulcan Construction Materials, LP, Hanover Quarry, 875 Oxford Avenue, Hanover, PA 17331, johnssonj@vmcmail.com

Although its mines may be relatively small when compared with other districts, Maryland was once a significant producer of chromite and copper. Whereas Cornish mining influences have been studied in many other mining regions, they have not been considered for this area. Using slides and text we will review the role of Cornish miners, mining captains, technology, and terminology in these mid-19th Century mines.
