TIPS FOR APPLYING TO GRADUATE SCHOOL

SCHREIBER, Madeline E., Department of Geosciences, Virginia Tech, 1405 Perry St, Blacksburg, VA 24061, mschreib@vt.edu

Applying to graduate school can seem like a daunting process but with some preparation and thought, it is manageable! The key is preparation: think about your interests and career options early on, choose coursework wisely, make connections with faculty, and get as much experience as possible in geosciences and/or your area of interest. It is also important to identify a selection of graduate programs that fit your interests and to talk with faculty from those programs about research opportunities. In this talk, I will present tips and advice about applying to graduate schools, based on my experiences as a faculty member and as a graduate program director at a research university. The talk will be broadly applicable to all geoscience majors.
