SUCCESSES & CHALLENGES IN CHESAPEAKE BAY SCIENCE COMMUNICATIONS

ENLOE, Margaret, Chesapeake Bay Program, 410 Severn Avenue, Communications Office, Annapolis, MD 21403; Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay, 501 6th St., Annapolis, MD 21403, menloe@chesapeakebay.net

There is an art and a science to successfully communicating scientific information to various audiences. For each audience you’re trying to reach – whether the public, media, stakeholders or other experts – the choices we make related to tools for conveying information, writing or speaking style, and timing are often the biggest factors in not only conveying information but also, most importantly, having the scientific data or messages accurately understood by readers or listeners.

In this presentation, Chesapeake Bay Program’s Communications Office professionals will present and discuss some of the successes and challenges they’ve faced in their more than twenty year history of communicating scientific findings, data and research with citizens, reporters and regional NGO’s. They will also provide some insights and materials that attendees can use in their own work.
