The Virginia Department of Mines, Minerals, and Energy, Division of Geology and Mineral Resources (DGMR) and its predecessors have been making printed geologic map products since the nineteenth century. Since 1996, DGMR has received support from the National Cooperative Geologic Mapping Program, STATEMAP component, to make geologic maps in Virginia. Before 2005, most of our our map products were served to the public in paper format. In 2005, DGMR began providing geologic maps as digital products in PDF format. DGMR has experimented with a variety of digital enhancements to map components using ESRI ArcGIS, Adobe Illustrator, and other programs to improve the readability and utility of our digital maps and better serve our variable customer base. We would like to present three 1:24,000 scale geologic maps of the Broadway, New Market and Timberville quadrangles, which are all available through our webstore as a free PDF download at https://www.dmme.virginia.gov/commerce/. The PDF download is much more than a static image; we have layered the PDF in such a way that it allows the user to turn different layers of data on or off to better suit their needs. This new and innovative format allows users to best utilize the data that they are interested in. This new geologic map product also allows map authors to include all of the data that they think is important to our wide customer base.
