ACCOMMODATIONS FOR VISUALLY IMPARED STUDENTS IN GEOLOGY LAB

GARDNER, Daniel J., Geosciences, Georgia State University, PO Box 4105, Atlanta, GA 30302, dgardner9@student.gsu.edu

Geologic concepts such as stratigraphy, reading a topographic map, and the identification of rocks and minerals can be very difficult to fully comprehend without the ability to see. This disadvantage can make the idea of taking geology courses intimidating for visually impaired students. Accommodations can be made to assure that visually impaired students have an equal opportunity to learn geologic concepts. These accommodations include the use of a Sensational Blackboard©, computer software such as the JAWS screen reader, and rock samples which the student can touch.
