USING MYNASADATA TO ASSIST PRE-SERVICE TEACHERS IN THE GENERATION OF AUTHENTIC DATA VISUALIZATIONS (Invited Presentation)

As adoption of the Next Generation Science Standards continues across the United States, more pre- and in-service teachers are confronted with the need to bring authentic data into the classroom in order to engage students in Science and Engineering Practices. In this digital poster, we will explore the tools available through the MyNASAData web portal. It provides a more user friendly interface to satellite mission data from NASA along with tools for creating customized time series, contour plots, sums and differences, and much more. It also has a number of lessons that conform to science standards that are ready for use in classrooms of various ages. We will also share some lessons learned from experiences of using MyNASAData in a geoscience teaching methods course at a primarily undergraduate institution in central New York state in 2012.
