INTELLIGENT SYSTEMS FOR GEOSCIENCES: MAKING A DIFFERENCE ONE SCIENTIST AT A TIME (Invited Presentation)

GIL, Yolanda, Information Sciences Institute, University of Southern California, 4676 Admiralty Way, Suite 1001, Marina del Rey, CA 90292, gil@isi.edu

Intelligent systems have permeated our lives, from voice-activated assistants, to self-driving cars, to winning game playing systems (AlphaGo, Watson), to social recommender systems. This talk will discuss the results of an NSF workshop on “Intelligent Systems for Geosciences”, focused on how machine learning, ontologies, robotics, and other artificial intelligence techniques could have a great impact in advancing geosciences research. Transformative research ideas included knowledge maps, model-driven sensing, trusted information threads, theory-guided learning, and interactive analytics.
