UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH AT A TWO-YEAR COMMUNITY COLLEGE? YES, IT CAN BE A SUCCESS!
This past spring Howard Community College, located in Columbia, Maryland, graduated its first cohort of S-STEM scholars in their newly developed Undergraduate Research Program. This Undergraduate Research Program was launched in 2015 after the science division received a National Science Foundation grant which enabled the school to introduce two-year students to research opportunities not normally found at the community college level. The research projects were mentored by HCC faculty specializing in geology, physical sciences, environmental science, engineering, and life sciences. This talk will provide an overview of the program and discuss the top 5 lessons learned from the first go around. It will also look at how the science division hopes to enhance and expand the program in future semesters.
