STROMATOLITE DIVERSITY AND USE AS PLANETARY ENVIRONMENTAL AND GEOLOGICAL PROXIES

BUSSIERE, Kathleen E., Geology, Mercyhurst University, 501 E 38th St, Erie, PA 16546 and MCKENZIE, Scott C., Department of Geology, Mercyhurst University, 501 East 38th St., Erie, PA 16546, kbussi83@lakers.mercyhurst.edu

Stromatolites exhibit a wide range of forms that can give data on planetary conditions and serve as environmental indicators. As our rovers investigate other planets, stromatolite-like structures may be encountered. Observations on Earthly stromatolites may prepare us to recognise and interpret conditions on other planets. We plan to show a diverse suite of stromatolithic forms and comment on the geological conditions they indicate.
