MOLLUSCAN FAUNA OF THE UPPER PLEISTOCENE WANDO FORMATION, CHARLESTON, SOUTH CAROLINA

CAMPBELL, Matthew R., Physical Sciences, Charleston Southern University, Science Building, 9200 University Blvd, Charleston, SC 29406, mrcampbell2007@gmail.com

McCartan, Weems, and Lemon (1980) defined the Wando Formation for Upper Pleistocene coastal sediments around Charleston, SC. They cited Blackwelder (unpublished data, 1980) for the identification of Scapharca brasiliana (Lamarck, 1819) and an unpublished brackish to shallow water invertebrate fauna. Identification of collections in the Charleston Museum permits further description of this fauna, with more than nineteen genera of bivalves and thirteen genera of gastropods in the molluscan fauna. The collections contain abundant Mulinia lateralis (Say, 1822); Donax variabilis Say, 1822; and Littoraria irrorata (Say, 1822); which are consistent with a shallow water marine to brackish coastal habitat.
